For many years, he has known the Sagunto region inside out – from the Roman ruins to the Moorish stories still carved into the stones. With his enthusiasm and knowledge, he brings every place to life. He organizes the “Timeless Sagunto” excursion – a fascinating journey through the layers of time in one of Spain’s oldest cities.
Timeless Sagunto – Museum, Castle & Roman Theatre
Discover Sagunto at an easy, in-depth pace: three iconic sites in one trip – from 2,000 years of history to a relaxed lunch at the foot of the castle.
What you’ll experience
- Begin at the museum (Via del Pòrtic) with archaeological remains: see how the street looked 2,000 years ago
- Visit the castle – a reasonable climb of a few hundred metres, rewarded with phenomenal views over the sea and valleys
- Feel the acoustics in the Roman theatre: watch history come to life
- To finish: a lunch at Le Fou restaurant, at the foot of the castle
The route
We start at the museum and take a beautiful walk from the foot of Sagunto up to the castle (pace agreed together). Along the way we pass through the old Jewish quarter, a maze of narrow streets once home to a thriving community. Here you’ll feel Sagunto’s layered history, where Jews, Romans and Moors all left their mark. We then descend towards the theatre and end the trip with an atmospheric lunch. The climb to the castle requires moderate fitness and good walking shoes are recommended.
Guiding & organisation
The excursion is organised by Johan de Smedt, sommelier and tour organiser at Secret Valencia. Johan provides excellent local guides who speak multiple languages fluently and bring Sagunto’s history and culture to life. Unhurried pace, personal attention, and always time for questions, photos and short breaks.
Practical
This is a half-day experience (approx. 4–5 hours). Entrance(s) and lunch are included, so you can simply relax and enjoy this special day. Don’t forget: bring good shoes – you’ll be literally walking through history!
