🚴‍♀️ Route Description – VĂa Verde de Ojos Negros
The VĂa Verde de Ojos Negros is the longest Greenway in Spain, linking the village of
Ojos Negros in the province of Teruel (AragĂłn)
with the coastal town of Sagunto in the province of
Valencia.
The route largely follows the old mining railway of the
Sierra Menera and crosses a wide variety of landscapes – from the high plateaus of Aragón to the Mediterranean coast, through valleys, tunnels, viaducts and orange groves.
The trail begins inland, first following small regional roads and well-surfaced gravel tracks up to
Santa Eulalia, where it joins the paved and fully equipped section of the Greenway.
From there it winds southwards into the Comunidad Valenciana, passing villages such as
Cella, Caudé, Teruel, Barracas, Caudiel and Jérica,
until reaching Algimia de Alfara, where the original railway route ends.
The final stretch continues along narrow asphalt roads and bike paths through
Gilet, descending to the
beaches of Sagunto, where the route naturally ends at the Mediterranean Sea.
With a total length of over 160 kilometres, this route is rated
moderate in difficulty, mainly because of its distance.
Thanks to its gentle gradients and the absence of steep climbs, it is
accessible to almost everyone with a basic level of fitness – ideal for cyclists who enjoy long, peaceful stages through diverse scenery with a touch of railway history.
đź’ˇ Tip: Combine this route with the
VĂa Verde Xurra to continue directly to the city of
Valencia and the Mediterranean Sea.
🌄 Palancia Valley – from Barracas to the Mediterranean Sea
From the plateau of Barracas (Sierra de Javalambre), the
VĂa Verde de Ojos Negros descends through the valley of the Palancia River,
connects with the VĂa Verde Xurra, and finally reaches the city of
Valencia through the fertile Valencian farmlands.
This section follows the former mining railway of the Sierra Menera
through the Palancia River Valley.
Starting from Barracas, at the foot of the
Sierra de Javalambre, the route gradually descends towards the Mediterranean.
At Sagunto there is a
7.4 km connection to the VĂa Verde Xurra leading directly to Valencia.
⚠️ ADIF Notice: As part of the project
“Widening of tunnels and viaduct clearances on Line 610 Bif. Teruel–Sagunto,”
there is a temporary detour at Tunnel 9 (Viver, CastellĂłn).
